Speak Good English Movement

Services: Content Strategy, Content Development, Information Architecture, Web Design

The old site was skewed towards campaign content. The site didn’t get a lot of traffic or return traffic. The look was also “too corporate” . It felt cold and did not encourage interactivity. There were also layout issues. Pages with actual learning content were very long and this proved difficult for low literacy users.

Through research and analysis of traffic logs, we found that users were looking for content that could help them improve their English. What came up consistently in our research was that users wanted local context. For interactivity, users wanted self-tests and quizzes.

After we had completed the content strategy, the designers got to work. We split the navigation into “corporate navigation” and “content navigation” for the two types of content on the website.

High up on the homepage, we featured games and quizzes. We also showed the content of the Lessons & Tips section so users could zoom into what they wanted. The layout for every piece of reading content is as “short and sweet” as possible to help low literacy users.

We used bright and energetic colours and slanted edge boxes to make it more “back to school”. We couldn’t make to too “kiddy” as we didn’t want adults to be turned off.
