What is information architecture?

Simply put, information architecuture is how information is structured. A sound information architecture reflects how your users think.

When we talk about web information architecture, we are usually referring to:

  • The classification of content
  • The taxonomy/terminology/lables
  • The navigation systems
  • The page structure (represented by wireframes)

Before developing your own information architecture, it’s always good to refer to established classification systems. If you are developing a tourism site, you might want to look at the popular tourism sites. Why? Users may be conditioned by existing classification, terminology and navigation systems. It might be better to emulate and adapt than to create a whole new way of doing things.
