Information Overload - Facts & Figures

March 25th, 2006

Just going through Content Critical (2002) by Gerry McGovern and Rob Norton. Not that I agree with everything the book says, but I think the authors raised a few very good points about how we are living in the age of information overload.

He cited a few examples on p4 to drive home the point. These are my favourites:

  • Every issue of The New York Times contains more information than someone in the 17th century would have read in a lifetime.
  • There is enough scientific information written every year to keep a person budy reading day and night for 460 years.
  • In the past 30 years we have produced more information than in the previous 5,000.
  • Every day 7 million new documents are published on the Web. There are already more than 550 billion web pages.

As content producers and developers, we must remember that if we want someone to read our stuff, it has got to be of value. To drive that value, we need to demand more and more of ourselves to cut through the clutter and reach our audience.
