Escaping Junk and Spam Filters
August 4th, 2006Tired of getting your e-mail newsletters marked as junk or spam? One of the ways to ensure your e-newsletters are received is to get your subscribers to add your e-mail address to their address books and safe sender lists. How? Just ask your subscribers (nicely) to do it.
Where and when? The two best places are (a) the confirmation page and (b) the confirmation e-mail.
You can write-up something simple like this:

Thank you for subscribing to Milky Moats Newsletter.
Follow these 3 simple steps to make sure you receive our newsletters.
1. Check your e-mail to make sure you received a confirmation message from us.
2. Click on the web link in the e-mail to confirm your subscription.
3. Add our e-mail address (milky@moats.com) to your safe sender list or addresss book.
Special Instructions for Microsoft Outlook Users
Sometimes, Microsoft Outlook makes the sad mistake of identifying our newsletters as Junk mail. To prevent Outlook from doing that, simple follow these steps:
1. Go to “Tools” and select “Options”
2. Go to the “Preferences” tab and click on the “Junk E-Mail” button
3. Go to the “Safe Senders” tab and click on “Add” button
4. Type in “moats.com” and click on the “OK” button
5. Click on “OK” all the way until you return to your inbox.

What is the Confirmation Page?
To sign up for your newsletter, your subscriber will have to fill up a web form. Once they click on “Submit” or “Join”, they will be re-directed to what techies call the “confirmation page”. Most of the time this page just says “Thank you for subscribing”.
What is the Confirmation E-mail?
Whenever someone subscribes to your newsletters, it’s always good practice to send them a confirmation e-mail. Most (if not all) e-mail systems should be able to do this automatically. Many confirmation e-mails also contain hyperlinks that the subscriber must click on to confirm his/her subscription. This prevents pranksters from subscribing using someone else’s e-mail.
