Speak Good English Website Launched
April 2nd, 2007It’s always such a wonderful feeling. The moment a website we’ve been working on is launched, there is a huge sense of elation and achievement. We cut over to the new website at 5am, so the “elation” was a little subdued, but it was definitely there.
Content Challenges
It was really great fun working with the client to craft the content strategy. Should it be a pure campaign site or one with learning resources? In the end, we decided it should contain learning resources so those who are motivated by the campaign can take the next step i.e. improve their English.
We took stock of all the existing content. Where possible, we repackaged them for online. The rest of the content, we had to develop from scratch. Donna really pushed herself to get all the content ready in time for the launch. She had to develop 8 months worth of content so that every week, there is something fresh on the site.
Now, the site is running without much management. Kuch has scheduled the content to auto-publish the new content every week. Now she’s busy training the client on how to use the content management system.
We’re tracking what’s hot and what’s not to see how we can improve the content every step of the way.
Usability
We conducted the usability tests on paper prototypes with the help of Marta. It was completely worth it. It proved the point once again that logical categorisation of content is not the same as user categorisation of the content.
If it weren’t for the usability testing, we may have ended with “English As It Is Broken” instead of “Ask About English” as a menu item!
Other challenges
Elaine’s been tearing her hair out to get the content management system to deliver a good user experience. We have devised several workarounds to get exactly what we want. It’s one of those frustrating yet rewarding experiences.
We also wanted a slightly differently look for each section and that took more work than we anticipated (It’s always the case isn’t it?).
We will continue tweaking the site based on user feedback.
