Virus emails your private files for you

July 19th, 2001

A new virus has hit users of Outlook. Known as W32.SirCam.Worm@mm, this worm is yet another mass-mail virus, except its much more potent than previous ones.

When run, it searches for Microsoft Office documents in the Personal/Desktop directories and attaches itself to one at random. Because it contains its own SMTP engine, it has the ability to send itself along with your document to all users in your Outlook address book.

If you are on a network with shared drives, it will also try and attach itself to documents in those drives and thereby spreading itself within the network.

How do you know if you have received such a worm?

1. Check the “Subject:” of the email. It will be the same at the file name of the document attachment in the email.

2. Check the “Body:” of the email. The contents are randomly created but it will contain one of the following two lines as the first and last sentences of the message. There are currently two versions. One in English and one in Spanish:

Spanish Version:
First line: Hola como estas ?
Last line: Nos vemos pronto, gracias.

English Version:
First line: Hi! How are you?
Last line: See you later. Thanks

For more information on how to eradicate this worm, check out Symantec’s website.
