Who needs 2GHz Pentium 4s?

August 27th, 2001

The talk on the street is that PCs with Pentium 4 chips running at 2GHz and 1.9GHz will hit the markets by next week. Given the soft PC retail market, these new desktops will be priced cheaply.

But do you really need the faster processing speed? Probably not.

A Pentium 4 running 1.7GHz will do the job just fine. Most of the desktops in the market right now can give you all the computing power you need to play graphics-intensive games and run sophisticated multimedia applications.

The only good thing about the 2GHz Pentium 4s is that it will probably push the price of these 1.7GHz ones even lower.

Instead of spending your hard-earned money on 2GHz Pentium 4s, consider getting more RAM or a better graphics or sound card with a slower Pentium 4 desktop.

But if you are the type that believes in buying the 2GHz “just in case”, at least wait a few weeks, or better still, a few months. The prices are headed only in one direction, down. Take your time. After all, a 2GHz Pentium 4 is nothing to boast about.
