More firepower for entry-level Palm users with the m125

September 21st, 2001

The newly launched Palm m125 is Palm’s high-end entry-level handheld although many contend that it supersedes the entry-level m100 handhelds currently in the market. The m100 series is only a year old, but the recent trend among handheld manufacturers to release new products just months apart has pushed Palm to do the same.

In terms of size and form factor, the m125 is almost indistinguishable from the older m100 handhelds. It’s slightly bigger and heavier. The design improvements are cosmetic with the m125 spotting a 2-tone faceplate and softer flip.

In terms of technology, there are some leaps. For one, the m125 ships with the dual-expansion architecture used on the m500 series which consists of an expansion slot and Palm’s universal connector.

With the Secure Digital / MultiMediaCard expansion slot, the m125 offers additional storage and data capacity. E-books, additional applications, videos, pictures and games can be stored in these tiny devices and slotted into your m125.

The universal connector allows you to snap on modules such as keyboards, digital cameras and modems. Modules currently available in the market for the m500 series can be used on the m125 as both have the same universal connector.

Besides the dual-expansion architecture, Palm has beefed up on the OS to the latest 4.0 version, the processor to Dragonball VZ 33 MHz and the data transfer method from serial to USB.

The Palm m125 is expected to retail in early October at S$449 which is a hundred dollars more expensive than the m105 and two hundred dollars more than the m100. Like the m500 series, it comes bundled with software such as DataViz Documents To Go 3.0, PocketMirror 3.0.2, Palm Reader 1.0, Palm Mobile Connectivity Kit, MultiMail SE and HotSync Mail, MGI PhotoSuite Mobile Edition 2.21 and AvantGo Mobile Internet Service.
