Content elements for brochureware sites

December 22nd, 2005

According to searchWebServices.com:

Brochureware refers to Web sites or pages that are produced by taking an organization’s printed brochure and translating it directly to the Web without regard for the possibilities of the new medium. In extreme cases, all the copy in the brochure will be used as-is and visual images will be copied as well. The result will almost always be static and uninteresting.

This little definition made us laugh a little. It’s true. Most companies find it really convenient to slap on their print brochure on the web. The content elements for both are actually very similar, which is why print content can be used on the web. However, it needs to be restructured, repurposed and repackaged to be effective.

At the very least, brochureware sites should have:

  • About Us
  • Products/Services
  • Customers & Testimonials
  • Onine Contact Form
  • Contact Details
  • Copyright notice

Here are a few other things you should include to make your site in line with best practices.

  • Meta Tags
  • Best viewed on [screen resolution]

If your brochureware site gets a bit larger, you might want to add:

  • Search Engine
  • Site Map

When you are ready to transition from brochureware to a full-fledged website, you can add more features such as:

  • Blogs
  • News & Articles
  • Success Stories

The key is to evolve your website. Don’t feel pressured to have all the content up at one time. Users expect a site to evolve. Besides, updating your content often is more effective than forklifting your entire website and leaving it to collect dust.
